Mintaka

Mintaka (Delta Orionis) is a star some 900 light years distant in the constellation Orion. Together with Zeta Orionis (Alnitak) and Epsilon Orionis (Alnilam), the three stars make up the belt of Orion, known by many names across many ancient cultures. Delta Orionis is the right-most star. Mintaka is from the Arabic "mantaqah" which means "belt" ).

Mintaka is actually a multiple star at the eastern end of Orion's belt, with a magnitude 7 star about 52" away from the main component and an even fainter star in between. The main component itself is also double, consisting of a class B giant and a smaller but hotter class O. The stars orbit each other every 5.73 days. These two stars are both about 70,000 times as luminous as the Sun with a mass of some 20 solar masses.

In Star Trek, the Mintaka system was the home system of Mintaka III, the home of the Mintakans. The Mintakans are a proto-Vulcan humanoid species native to Mintaka III, who exist in a Bronze Age state of technology. Despite their relatively minimal technological advancement Mintakan culture was highly empirical and by 2366 they had long since rejected the notion of a god or other supernatural beings. In 2366, a Federation anthropological team studying the Mintakans accidentally exposed the primitive culture to 24th century technology when the duck blind they were operating out of had a reactor failure. The USS Enterprise-D responded to the situation and unknowingly worsened the cultural contamination when the Mintakans observed their comings and goings. As a result, the previously discarded beliefs in supernatural beings began to resurface in the village most directly affected. This would eventually lead to their mistaking Jean-Luc Picard for the Overseer, one of their gods (TNG: "Who Watches The Watchers").
