|Star Trek has
borrowed freely from the scientific world to provide the advanced
technology found in its storylines. Many of the technologies "created"
for Star Trek were done so out of simple economic necessity — the
transporter was created because the budget of the original series in
the 1960s did not allow for expensive shots of spaceships landing on
planets. However, many of those imagined technologies are today a
reality - such as those Starfleet communicatos we use today that we
call 'cell phones'. And scientists and engineers are today setting the
technical foundations for Star Trek-inspired engineering
accomplishments such as transporters and cloaking devices.
This Engineering Deck houses a comprehensive technical database of those Star Trek technologies, together with information on how real science and engineering are today catching up to those technologies. In addition, information is available on advanced engineering concepts such as warp theory and starship design, and the potential for their application today.
